Rabies Shot or Vaccine After Animal Bite

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, report it immediately to the Animal Services Division by calling the non-emergency Police line: 301.279.8000 (Option 2). Prompt reporting allows for proper investigation and quarantine to prevent the possibility that the victim will contract rabies.

Also following a bite, contact the disease control clinic at: 240.777.1755. A nurse will ask a series of questions about how the bite occurred and rabies shots (also known as Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) may be recommended.

In Montgomery County first aid care for an animal bite and/or Rabies Immuneglobulin and Rabies Vaccine must be administered in an emergency room. During the first emergency room the patient will receive 3 to 4 shots; then 3 more rabies shots over a 2-week period at pre-determined intervals. Please check with the administering health care professionals or hospital about the financial cost/coverage aspects of receiving a course of Rabies Vaccine, which may not be covered by insurance.

To speak with a Customer Service Representative, please call 311 during business hours.
