Montgomery County Department of Transportation is expanding the demonstration dockless bicycle program to test dockless e-bikes and e-scooters in east and west portions of the county. A map of the service areas is posted on the MCDOT website. MCDOT selected 3 companies to deploy e-bikes and e-scooters at no cost to the County: Lime, Spin and Bird signed an MOU which is available on the MCDOT website. Dockless vehicles are intended to be ridden and parked within the mapped demonstration area and do not rely on fixed stations.
The e-bikes and e-scooters are available to anyone 18 or older with a valid driver's license. Riders must download the company application, or register over the phone, and provide a credit card. Dockless vehicles can be located using the company's application; the rider scans the "QR" code to start the trip.
When a trip is completed, the vehicle can be parked wherever bike parking is allowed within that company's service area. E-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed to be ridden on the sidewalks in the County; helmets should be worn by all riders. Free monthly training sessions are available, please check the MCDOT website for information on upcoming sessions. New e-scooter riders are encouraged to attend to learn to ride in a safe setting. Questions, concerns or feedback about the dockless vehicles should be sent by email to [email protected] or by calling the TRiPS Commuter Store at 240.773.8747 between the hours of 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday - Friday and 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. A survey for community feedback also will be posted on the MCDOT website soon.
