Adopt A Road and Adopt A Spot Programs (Community Outreach)

Adopt A Road (AAR) volunteers help keep our neighborhoods attractive, clean, safe and litter-free by regularly removing accumulated trash from alongside more than 1,500 lane miles of adopted roadways. With budget constraints within the County (resulting in less mowing and road cleaning) community involvement has become increasingly important. Cleanup efforts keep pollutants out of our waterways and help protect the water supply. Participants agree to keep their adopted road litter free by removing trash as needed, with at least six times a year (the equivalent to every other month) and report the cleaning results to MCDOT. In recognition, signs will be installed with the participant's name (signs are not required to participate). There is no cost to participate and no limits as to how long a road may be adopted. A list of available roads for adoption and more information can be found on the program website at montgomerycountymd.gov/adoptaroad.

Adopt A Spot (AAS) volunteers help keep our neighborhoods attractive, clean and litter-free by regularly removing accumulated trash from areas such as County right--of-ways (traffic circles), landmarks, vacant lots or public grounds (must receive approval from the property owner before submitting an application). Participants are to gain approval from the spots property owner to clean and to install a 12 x 12 sign with the group/individuals name. They agree to keep the adopted spot litter free by removing trash at least 12 times a year (every month) and report cleaning efforts to MCDOT. In recognition, one sign (affixed to a post) will be fabricated, for the participant to pick up from the Executive Office Building in Rockville, MD.
