Adopt A Road Program Information

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) manages the Adopt A Road (AAR) program. It encourages residents and businesses of the County to participate in a community activity by keeping roads clean and litter free. Volunteers agree to keep their adopted road segment (about a half mile to one mile in length) litter free by removing litter at least six times a year (the equivalent to every other month) and report the cleaning results to MCDOT. In recognition and agreement of the volunteers' cleaning and reporting efforts, MCDOT will install sign(s) bearing the volunteer's name. The program is free to join, and signs are not required to participate. MCDOT will also provide cleaning equipment for free.

This program helps in minimizing the accumulation of litter in the public rights-of-way. When left uncollected, litter and debris will be washed into the storm drains, and ultimately into the watersheds that feed into other water systems including the Chesapeake Bay. Since MCDOT has no funded litter collection program, the AAR program is a valuable tool in helping to keep our roads and streams environmentally healthy as well as ensuring a high quality of life in Montgomery County.
