Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service (FRS) strives to educate residents on the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. Homeowners should review the "Montgomery County Residential Smoke Alarm Requirements" document to determine the type and location of smoke alarms that meets the Code for their home. Smoke alarms are required by law. The FRS DOES NOT install or provide HARD-WIRED SMOKE ALARMS and recommends that an electrician or certified professional replace hard- wire smoke alarms. If a home does not have working smoke alarms, residents are encouraged to purchase and install them as soon as possible. The department can assist homeowners that are unable to afford, purchase or install 10-year long-life battery-operated smoke alarms. Renters should contact their landlord or property manager for assistance.
