Abandoned Property - Comptroller's Division

The Department of Finance mails letters for unclaimed property (usually un-cashed checks) which have been dormant for over three years. There are two letters that one might receive about an abandoned property. If the letter head on the letter says AP is it is from Accounts Payable, it will state "Accounts Payable".

The customer or business must complete and sign the claim form and return it along with the two forms of identification as noted on the form. Mail the claim form in the envelope provided within thirty days of the date on the letter.

If the thirty-day limit has expired, there is no guarantee that the County can make the payment. The County will return any paperwork that cannot be processed because of the time limit to be sent to the State Comptroller's Office, 410.260.7980.

One piece of identification must be a government issued identification document with a picture. Acceptable forms of picture ID include passport, consular ID from Guatemala and Mexico, driver's license, military identification, Maryland identification card.

The second piece of identification must bear the person's name and address. Acceptable forms of second identification include: voter registration card, utility bill, pay stub, bank statement, and vehicle registration
