When a business is in a forfeited status, a tax clearance certificate can be issued after a bill has been generated and taxes are paid in full. However, if all personal property taxes have been paid and there is a $0 balance, there may be other circumstances that would require the business owner to contact SDAT to obtain a letter of Good Standing because their business is in forfeited status. A letter of good standing is not a tax clearance certificate and is given only by SDAT.
If there is no generated tax bill, then the taxes owed will need to be estimated and customer will need to contact SDAT to obtain a Manual Assessment Letter so that a personal property tax bill can be generated by Division of Treasury, request can be made by phone, email or online (see link below). 410-767-1170 or 410-767-1330.
