The Senior Citizens Real Property Tax Deferral program began on July 1, 2016. Applications are available at the Division of Treasury and online by clicking on the link below. The amount that a taxpayer who meets all of the requirements of the law will be allowed to defer is only the amount by which their 2016 County Tax amount exceeds their 2015 County Tax amount.
To qualify for the Senior Citizens tax deferral, all of the following conditions must be met:
At least one of the applicants must be at least 65 years old
The applicants must have resided in the dwelling as their principal residence for five consecutive years, and continue to occupy the property as their principal residence
The combined income of those who live in the house must not have exceeded $80,000 in the previous calendar year. All applications are due by September 1.
Note:The deferred taxes are a lien on the property and a personal liability, and the County will record the lien in the land records of the County at the expense of the property owner. There is no deferral of State taxes; there is no deferral for municipal taxes, fees and charges; there is no deferral for County charges for Water Quality Protection, Solid Waste Fees, or any other charges. Only the County Property Tax amount may be deferred on your tax bill that is the line labeled "COUNTY PROPERTY TAX".
