Standby Judges may be called upon to replace judges who have withdrawn prior to or on Election Day. For each election, the Board of Elections specifies the number of judges needed to staff each polling site based on voter registration and turnout. In addition to recruiting the base complement of judges, a reserve force of Standby Judges are recruited to respond to unexpected vacancies.
