Obtain a Tax Clearance Certificate

A Tax Clearance Certificate is a document from the County Department of Finance certifying that all County personal property taxes have been paid. For businesses that are in forfeited status, a tax clearance certificate may will be issued after all due taxes are collected. When the tax bill is not available online or has not been generated, the taxes owed will need to be estimated (in the Finance system). To estimate taxes owed, Finance needs assessment values to be available on SDAT?s website https://egov.maryland.gov/businessexpress/entitysearch, or they require a Manual Assessment Letter from SDAT. When the tax bill status is known, a Tax Clearance Certificate request may be submitted by mail or in person at the Division of Treasury located at: 27 Courthouse Square, Suite 200, Rockville, MD. 20850, or by submitting a service request. If taxes are paid, pickup of the certificate can be done in-person M-F from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Note: a person can walk in to pay back taxes AND walk away with a certificate on the same day.

Note: out of state callers or businesses may submit a request online, and the certificate (if taxes are paid) can be emailed or mailed.
