FareShare Program

Commuters working in Montgomery County can get a tax-free benefit of up to $325 a month in 2025 for using public transit, or vanpooling, by asking their employers to set up a commuter benefits program. The "FareShare" program of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) offers reimbursements to local businesses for their employees' costs for commuting to and from work by public transit or vanpool -- and the money is tax-free to both the commuter and the employer.

The program covers expenses incurred by commuters using Ride On bus, Metrobus, Metrorail or MARC train as well as vanpools to commute to and from a workplace within Montgomery County. Employees receiving this benefit do not need to be County residents - they just need to work at a site in Montgomery County. Businesses looking to implement a commuter benefits program must provide the first $25 per month of travel costs for employees. The County will cover expenses above that initial $25, up to $325 a month. The full subsidy could be as high as $3,900 per year, per employee. Again this benefit is tax-free to both the employee and the employer, making it worth even more than a raise for the amount provided.
