The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Stormwater Facility Maintenance Program inspects and/or maintains thousands of stormwater facilities around the County.

Stormwater facilities include wet ponds, dry ponds, sand filters, underground storage structures, roadway rain gardens and green streets. Those commonly found on residential properties include rain gardens, rain barrels, dry wells, swales and green roofs.

If mosquitoes are breeding in a stormwater facility, like a pond, due to malfunction or because of inadequate maintenance, DEP staff will investigate the complaint. DEP will not investigate non-stormwater features including agricultural and fish ponds, storm drains, roadside ditches or other residential sources of mosquitoes.

Once the investigation by DEP staff is complete, DEP will contact the property owner if remediation is required and inform the requestor of the result of the investigation.

If the stormwater facility is functioning properly, DEP cannot require the owner of the facility to abate the mosquito problem.
