The Office of Animal Services removes dead domestic animals (e.g., dogs, cats) and larger wild animals (possum-sized or bigger) from county roads and nearby private property. This includes animals like raccoons, groundhogs, and deer, but not small animals such as squirrels, rabbits, snakes, or small birds. If a dead animal is creating a traffic hazard, call 911.
Removal typically occurs within 24 hours of notification, including weekends. For animals on state roads, municipal property, or M-NCPPC property, Animal Services will notify the appropriate agency but cannot control or estimate removal time.
Pet owners are responsible for disposing of deceased pets. Contact Animal Services for options, or bring pets to the shelter for a $5 fee (livestock not accepted).
To request removal online, submit a service request with the exact location (street and address). Include details such as the specific location, nearby cross streets, animal type, and any helpful landmarks. Provide a contact number to speed up service.
Animals cannot be retrieved from trash containers, pools, ponds, or from under structures.
