Geothermal heating and cooling systems use the relatively steady temperature of the earth to keep your home comfortable with minimal energy use. In heating mode, a geothermal heat pump circulates water underground, using that nearly inexhaustible source to provide warmth indoors. In cooling mode, the excess heat from indoors is transferred to the ground via that same system. A geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump, requires vertical wells or horizontal ground loops in most cases, making these systems more expensive to install than typical HVAC options. The Electrify MC pilot program offers an incentive to install a geothermal heat pump, when switching from a fossil fuel heating system. Other incentives may be available, such as a federal tax credit.
