Medical Assistance for Newborns

Newborn babies are automatically certified for Medical Assistance (MA) if the mother has Medical Assistance when she delivers. This may not always happen if the hospitals did not send the correct form to the State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). If the form is sent, the child is immediately put on MA and is mailed an MA card with a temporary ID number. The baby is automatically enrolled in the mother's Managed Care Organization (MCO). The mother's MA number cannot be used to cover services provided to the child. If a mother does have MA, she does not have to reapply for the baby. Customer should check to see that their address is correct in order to receive the temporary card. For any issues with a baby getting on Medical Assistance, send a service request to the office.

If the mother does not have MA, they must enroll the child in Maryland Health Connection (MCH) as soon as possible. Click link below to apply on line; phone the State call center: 1.855.642.8572; or apply In-person (click link for locations). Customers who have a case in a MAGI unit no longer have an assigned caseworker.

Office locations are as follows: Rockville, 1401 Rockville Pike, 1st floor, South; Germantown, 12900 Middlebrook Road, 2nd floor; Silver Spring, 8630 Fenton Street, 10th floor.
