Cedar Lane Closure

On Friday, June 6, the State Highway Administration (SHA) must close a 1000-foot section of Cedar Lane between Elmhirst Parkway and MD 355 (Rockville Pike) in Bethesda. Weather permitting, this section is expected to reopen in late August.

The temporary summer closure is necessary for the MD 355 / Cedar Lane intersection improvement project. Crews will build a new entrance at Cedar Lane and Elmhirst Parkway for the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, install a new traffic signal, and replace aging pipes underneath Cedar Lane within the work zone.

DETOUR: To complete this phase of work, SHA will redirect traffic around the work zone on Cedar Lane 24 hours a day, seven days a week via an approved detour route of MD 355 (Rockville Pike), MD 547 (Strathmore Avenue/ Knowles Avenue) and Summit Avenue. Motorists should plan ahead and add extra travel time. The Route 34 RideOn bus that serves Cedar Lane will follow the detour that was used during a Summer 2011 bridge reconstruction project. Please reference map below.

Electronic message boards will advise motorists about the temporary closure of Cedar Lane. Pedestrians will be directed to safe crossing areas via orange construction signs, cones, barrels and fencing. Residents and travelers are advised that construction equipment may be loud and disruptive. SHA thanks area residents and commuters for their patience and cooperation as crews complete this phase of work.
