Licensing a Pet

All cats and dogs over the age of four months require a pet license (see exception below). To apply for a Pet License online, please click on the second link below.

Pet Licenses can also be obtained by mailing the application, a current rabies certificate, and the appropriate fee to the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center, 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd., Derwood, MD 20855. Applications are available online, at many veterinary hospitals, or at the County animal shelter. Fees for both dogs and cats are free for those under the age of 1 year; $12 per year for altered pets and $25 per year for unaltered pets.

Additional information can be obtained by clicking on the first link below or by calling 240.773.5946.

Residents of Rockville City and Gaithersburg City are exempt from County pet licensing but need to license their pets with the Animal Control department of the municipality in which they reside. All other jurisdictions and municipalities in the County have to license their cat or dog with the County. Rockville City pet license information is available by calling 240.314.8937 and Gaithersburg City's Animal Control Department can be reached by dialing 301.258.6343.
