Election Judge Requirements and Registration

Election Judges work with the Board of Elections (BOE) and are responsible for managing the polls on Election Day. For a list of the duties of the various kinds of Election Judges, please consult the BOE website, click on the "Election Judge," then "Position" tab. The polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM; Election Judges are required to be at the polling site at 6:00 AM and are dismissed by the Chief Judge when the polls are closed and all of the equipment and supplies are neatly packed. Applicants interested in a part-time position may consider becoming a Closing Judge. A Closing Judge reports to the precinct at 6:30 PM and works until the polls close. A Closing Judge is also responsible for returning critical materials to the BOE on election night. To serve as an Election Judge, candidates must be registered to vote in the state of Maryland and be at least 17 years old. Election Judges may serve in a county in which they do not reside, so long as they are registered to vote in Maryland.
