To help homeowners deal with large assessment increases on their principal residence, state law has established the Homestead Property Tax Credit. The Homestead Credit limits the increase in taxable assessments each year to a fixed percentage. Every county and municipality in Maryland is required to limit taxable assessment increases to 10% or less each year (in Montgomery County it is 10%). The owner must have lived at the property for a full tax year and the property must be listed as their principal residence.

The Homeowner's Property Tax Credit is based on income and the value of the home. The credit amount is determined by the State Department of Assessments & Taxation (SDAT) Credit office, who can be reached at 1.800.944.7403. The County Council votes on the amount of the County property tax credit every year, therefore, it may vary.
