Smoke Alarm or Detector Requirements Residential Homes or Apartments
Smoke detectors or alarms are required outside each sleeping area in the home and should also be placed on every level of the home. If the home was built after 1975, there may be additional requirements for the type of smoke alarm and where it should be placed. (see website link for details). Smoke alarms can be powered by batteries or hardwired into the electrical system. Some smoke alarms can be interconnected which means if the alarm in the basement is going off, it will signal the alarm located upstairs to activate. These features may be required if the home was built after 1975 or there have been renovations in the home. If the home has been expanded or renovated, the County's Department of Permitting Services has information on any additional requirements on the placement of smoke alarm.

It is important to have working smoke alarms in every home. If you do not have a working smoke alarm, please purchase and install one immediately. If you have no working smoke alarms in your home, please tell your MC311 representative or contact your closest fire station for assistance with having one installed immediately.
